Q&A: What auto insurance companies DON’T use a credit score when deciding rates?

Question by Nynavey: What auto insurance companies DON’T use a credit score when deciding rates?
I’m against the practice of using credit scores (i.e. insurance scores) to decide auto insurance rates. Does anyone know of a company in the U.S. that doesn’t use the practice?

Whether you’re against it or not, that’s what they do. I don’t know how you’d find out, I guess you’d have to check with each company and ask.

There was a story about this on the news the other evening and they said 1 late credit card payment can increase your insurance rates.

Which auto insurance companies will not cancel policy/raise rates if there is an accident?

Question by Christy H: Which auto insurance companies will not cancel policy/raise rates if there is an accident?
I am comparing prices for car insurance. I have had State Farm forever. After talking to them and asking them what I should look for when shopping for car insurance is a policy that wont cancel you or raise rates if you have an accident. We have made claims in the past (storm damage and I hit a tree stump – no actual vehicle to vehicle accidents) and our rates have not gone up. Do other companies do the same? What about Traveler’s Auto Insurance?

How to shop for car insurance rates?

Question by ilovecats: How to shop for car insurance rates?
I need to find car insurance rates to compare, but I can’t find a site that lets me do a comparison and get results on the internet. I don’t want to give them my phone number and email because I know I’ll be spammed to death by people trying to sell me something.

Is there anywhere I can go to get comparison rates for free without having to put in contact information like that?

is there a small car insurance company serving washington state with low rates?

Question by Nathan: is there a small car insurance company serving washington state with low rates?
In Oregon and California you can get Wawanesa insurance, their rates are about half what the big companies charge, I got a quote from them. Unfortunately I now live in Washington state and cannot get it here. I Didn’t have them when I lived in Oregon. They don’t advertise and I found out about them through word of mouth. I pay $ 1800 a year for a 96 Camry, full coverage, state minimum. Way too much money, I’ve never filed a claim in my life. 28 year old guy w/ bad credit. I’ve tried shopping around for years, tried all the websites I could find. I’ve got a quote from every company you’ve heard of and some you haven’t. I could save maybe $ 10 a month by switching but that’s not going to solve the problem. If it exists in Oregon, there has to be some similar company serving Washington state with very low rates, that just doesn’t advertise and has little online presence? Can anyone provide the name of such a company?

Why are NYS auto insurance rates so high?

Question by Frank S: Why are NYS auto insurance rates so high?
I live in NYC, and have taken over my late Dad’s auto insurance. I was looking up quotes from other insurance companies (currently have Geico), and all the quotes are the same as I pay now, or more. My own license is clean, no accidents, violations, tickets, etc. I just want to know why NYS auto insurance rates are so high?
